What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is very common in both men and women. Hyperpigmentation is brown discoloration of the skin caused by an increase in the amount of melanin. It is a general term that describes different types of skin discoloration. This happens when the cells that give your skin its color are triggered to start overproducing pigment. A variety of factors can cause this trigger, including sun exposure, hormone changes, certain health conditions, genetics, skin aging and medication.

Types of Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is classified into several different types. The most common include:

  • Melasma: This is a common skin condition that leads to patchy or blotchy discoloration. It usually appears on the face, though some people may experience it on the neck, arms or other parts of the body. These patches are generally darker than your natural skin tone and can look like freckles or cover a larger area. Melasma often develops during pregnancy or while taking birth control pills, so it tends to impact women more frequently than men in general.

  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation: This type describes spots or patches of discolored skin that develop after some type of skin trauma. These triggers can include an acne breakout, skin wound, irritation, hormonal changes, certain medications or other skin conditions. People with medium to dark skin tones may be more susceptible to experiencing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation due to the amount of melanin present in the skin.

  • Age Spots: Sometimes referred to as liver spots, age spots are flat and dark marks that typically develop after the age of 40. This is usually noticed on parts of the body that see the most sun, like the face, backs of the hands, shoulders or forearms.

  • Sun Exposure: Prompts an overall darkening of the skin in most skin types. This is because the sun's UV rays drive pigment cells to overproduce which in turn leads to dark spots.

  • Hormonal Changes: Which include hormonal forms of birth control, pregnancy and menopause commonly lead to hyperpigmentation. In particular, a fluctuation of female sex hormone levels in estrogen and progesterone can trigger skin discoloration conditions like melasma.

  • Skin Trauma or Inflammation: Any form can lead to hyperpigmentation. This can include an acne breakout, cut, wound, friction, bug bite or a skin condition like eczema which all prompt inflammation. As a result, melanin cells start over-producing, leading to a darker spot after the trauma has healed.

  • Stress: May also trigger skin discoloration by activating cortisol which is a stress hormone. According to some research, releasing an excess amount of this hormone can prompt an overdrive of melanin leading to hyperpigmentation.

  • Medication: Some types of medication can also lead to hyperpigmentation. These include antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antimalarials, anti-seizure medications, hormonal birth control pills and medications that increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight, such as retinoids and some blood pressure medications.

Superficial pigment can be treated well with a chemical peel.

Deeper pigment is very difficult to get rid of. For this deeper pigment, the melanopeel treatment, which is an effective treatment for all skin types to reduce pigmentation spots.

In order to achieve maximum efficacy, it synergistically combines different whitening agents that inhibit the melanogenesis process in different stages, blocking the production of melanin. It also has exfoliating agents that accelerate the cell renewal process and produce epidermal desquamation, eliminating the melanin found in the keratinocytes and lightening the skin tone.

The combination of depigmenting active agents with antioxidants and anti-free radicals clears and rejuvenates the skin at the same time as it stimulates the production of collagen.

The addition of solar filters guarantees long-lasting results, preventing the reappearance of blemishes.
